A Practical Guide to Starting Music Lessons

Prepare for your first singing lesson, plan beginner practice and choose singing or keyboard lessons. Passionet classes last 50 minutes, in English or Chinese.

A Passionet learning guide · Updated 5 October 2026

What should I prepare for my first singing lesson?

Choose a song you enjoy and think about what you want to improve: matching notes, keeping time or feeling more comfortable singing. You do not need to perform it perfectly or have previous training. When booking, share the student’s age, experience, preferred teaching language and available times.

Passionet’s RM99 trial is a full 50-minute class. Use the lesson to discuss your goals, exercises suitable for your starting level and what to practise before the next lesson.

How can a beginner practise between lessons?

Start with one exercise your teacher recommends or a short passage from your chosen song. Listen to the melody and rhythm, then work through the passage slowly. Focus on one goal at a time instead of trying to improve every part of a song at once.

Record a short passage if you find it useful, and note where you would like help. Sing within a comfortable range. For keyboard practice, slow down to check the rhythm and chords. Bring one specific question to your next lesson so your teacher can help you choose the next step.

Should I start with singing or keyboard?

Choose singing if your main goal is to develop your voice, pitch and song expression. Choose pop keyboard if you want to play songs, understand chords or accompany singing. Both welcome beginners; start with the musical goal that matters most to you.

If you are unsure, tell us what music you enjoy and what you hope to learn. Passionet singing programs start from RM420 per month; keyboard lessons cost RM420 per month. There are four 50-minute sessions per month, with teaching in English or Chinese.
